Monday night, Brick City Supper Club celebrated its 5 year anniversary.  The group got together at La Cocina on New Street in Halsey Village for a great night of food, drinks, and laughs.  La Cocina was particulary gracious in bringing Brick City Supper Club to the restaurant in light of the fact that they don’t normally stay open past 5pm.  The current neighborhood (even with the college campuses nearby) just doesn’t sustain late night hours unless you have a bar.  And not only was Brick City Supper Club welcomed in with open arms, they crafted an prix fixe, all-you-can-eat menu with unlimited soft drinks, iced teas, and water!  Melvin Sykes, on of Newark’s taste-makers, even contributed a case of wine for the night!

We reached out to Frank Martinez, the founder of Brick City Supper Club about the idea behind it all, and he said, “I had been living in Newark for about six months when I started Supper Club. The idea was simple: Get people together in Newark for food and conversation. Get to know our city and each other. Support the local economy. Absolutely everybody was welcome. No agenda beyond that.

It’s super gratifying that five years later so many different people are coming together because of Supper Club and that the group keeps growing. Rob and all the new Supper Clubbers deserve a ton of credit for taking it to the next level. I moved out of Newark last spring, and I’m really proud that something I helped build is thriving. My best memories of Supper Club were having a great conversation with someone I know I wouldn’t have met otherwise, and I love that more and more people are connecting and making friends in Newark that same way.”

The Newark Times has been covering Brick City Supper Club regularly for about the past month or so, and I’ve been attending for about 5-6 months now.  Rob Thomas has taken the helm and has been the group’s fearless leader since Frank Martinez moved to the mid-west.  There is a real simple elegance to Brick City Supper Club that you may not appreciate unless you actually go.  And all you’ve got to do is email Brick City Supper Club and you’ll be added to the group!
