Yesterday, Weequahic High School held an assembly led by English teacher, Rob Hylton, and History teacher, Bashir Akinyele entitled, Can Your Poetry Stop A Bullet?  The assembly opened with the Black National Anthem, “Lift Every Voice And Sing” and included spoken word poetry, a live band, DJ, and a skit, all performed by Weequahic High School students.

Featured performers included spoken word poet and actor David Roberts (aka D-Black), Tracy Moses, iMega, Chavaughn O’neal, Shaquille Henry, Jamal “J-Skillz” Hinnant, and Margie “Mia X” Johnson.

By the end of the assembly, a few things had been made resoundingly clear:  The Weequahic High School students gave proof positive that Newark youth are and wish to be actively engaged in their education.  The Weequahic High School faculty that organized the assembly and those who actively supported it proved that there are teachers who are personally invested in the students they teach.
