Philip’s Academy Charter School in Newark hosted The First Lady, Michelle Obama, as she continued her American Garden Tour today.  She met with 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students at the school’s rooftop garden as they spoke with her about the garden and the work they do to maintain the food supply at the school.

Ms. Obama then went downstairs to the school cafeteria to learn about the Eco Spaces program, a lunch program that the school has designed and implemented to teach the students food literacy including broader points of health and wellness.  The school uses their learning environments—a rooftop garden, teaching kitchen, AeroFarms indoor growing lab, and dining room—to connect core curriculum to food literacy in an interactive way.

The First Lady tasted the beet & berry smoothie as well as the quinoa bars and although she admitted that she wasn’t a fan of beets, she enjoyed the smoothie.
