The Newark Housing Authority announced the availability of two college scholarship programs accepting applications for 2017.   Each program has different eligibility requirements and deadlines, it is important that students read the information below in its entirety to ensure that they are eligible to apply.   Students may apply for both programs; however, each application must be completed individually.

Newark Housing Authority Scholarship Foundation

  • Public housing resident or participant in the housing choice voucher program administered by the Newark Housing Authority as of September 2016.
  • Current resident in Newark, New Jersey.
  • Exhibit financial need.
  • Be a graduating high school senior, class of 2017.
  • Register in a four year college/university full-time for 2017-2018 academic year.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  • Must apply for federal aid using the Free Application Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • DEADLINE – March 17, 2017.  Apply online at http://www.newarkha.org/nhasf

The Newark Housing Authority Scholarship  Foundation scholarship is an $8,000, four year scholarship.  Up to five students will be awarded this scholarship and can attend any college/university, in or out state.

Newark College Promise

  • Public housing resident or participant in the housing choice voucher program administered by the Newark Housing Authority at least 12 months immediately prior to the application deadline.   
  • Current resident in Newark, New Jersey.
  • Exhibit financial need.
  • Be a high school senior, class of 2017, graduating from a Newark High School.
  • Have a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or greater.
  • Must apply for federal aid using the Free Application Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
  • Have been accepted into one of the following public New Jersey State accredited 4-year institutions of higher education:  Kean University; Montclair State University; New Jersey City University; Ramapo College of New Jersey; Rutgers University; The College of New Jersey; The Richard Stockton College of New Jersey; William Paterson University of New Jersey; Or have been accepted into the accredited 2-year higher education institute, Essex County College**.
  • DEADLINE – May 8, 2017.  Apply online at http://www.newarkha.org/promise

Newark College Promise students must be graduating from a Newark Public School and attend a college/university in Newark, NJ.

** Students who have been accepted into Essex County College must:

  • Commit to transferring into a public New Jersey State accredited 4-year institution of higher education.
  • Be placed into college-level English by scoring 7 on the WritePlacer Accuplacer test or scoring 6 on the English Essay Placement Test that is scored by faculty readers or scoring 540 on the Critical Reading section of the SAT or scoring 21 on the English/Reading section of the ACT.
  • Be placed into college level Math by scoring 76 on the Elementary Algebra Accuplacer test or scoring 530 on the Mathematics section of the SAT or scoring 21 on the Mathematics section of the ACT.
