Are you worried about the Ebola epidemic?  Do you think there’s too much hype spreading?  Some have voiced that there haven’t nearly been enough cases of people who actually contracted the virus to substantiate all of the media hype.

A West African passenger on a flight that landed at Newark Liberty International Airport was taken to University Hospital because of concerns about from reported symptoms or having a potential exposure to Ebola, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Tuesday night.

“The passenger is being transported to a local hospital for further evaluation. CDC or state/local public health officials will contact other passengers on the aircraft should it be determined that there was any risk to the other passengers of exposure to communicable disease.” The hospital – one of the state’s three Level 1 trauma centers – was the scene of heightened activity, with staff telling visitors it was on “lockdown.”

It all seems like a lot of unnecessarily heightened anxiety.  Granted, if someone were to actually contract the virus and it were to spread here in Newark, I would be on high alert.

Mayor Baraka released this statement yesterday:”

“The City of Newark welcomes the additional measures the Department of Homeland Security is taking to protect the public health of our nation, by adding additional screening measures at Newark Liberty International Airport for travelers from the three West African Ebola-affected countries. We will work with our federal, state, county, and health care partners to ensure that Ebola does not threaten our City. We note that there are presently no direct flights from Ebola-affected countries to Newark, or any airport in the United States.

“We also note that only three Americans have been infected with the Ebola virus during this latest epidemic, and our nation’s health agencies are working diligently to prevent further incidents. We are also aware that many Newark residents have relatives in the affected countries of Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea, and we have these residents and their families in our thoughts and prayers as a caring world unites to address this epidemic.”
