Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director of the Department of Health and Community Wellness Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook have activated a “Code Blue” cold weather health warning for Newark from 8 p.m. Thursday, January 2, until 9 a.m. Monday, January 6. During this period, temperatures are expected to drop to a low of 26°F, creating risks for vulnerable populations.
Newark residents are reminded of the City’s Housing Code, which requires property owners to maintain a minimum indoor temperature of 68°F from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. and 65°F from 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Residents experiencing insufficient heat or hot water should contact the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471 for assistance.
A “Code Blue” is typically issued when temperatures fall to 32°F or when wind chill factors reach 0°F, as it signals the potential for cold weather-related health issues. Residents are urged to take necessary precautions, especially during these extreme temperatures, and to check on neighbors who may be isolated or in need of assistance. Vulnerable groups such as seniors and individuals with chronic health issues are particularly at risk for cold-related illnesses.
In response to the “Code Blue”, the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services is extending shelter hours and increasing bed capacity. Outreach teams will also continue to provide support for those in need from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. If you encounter someone who is unsheltered and in need of non-emergency services, text “Path Home” to 855-11, and outreach teams will locate them and offer help. For additional shelter information, residents can contact the Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481, Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
