Code for Newark, the noble tech brigade of Code for America that facilitates learning, teaching, and volunteering to code, will be hosting the PATH Data Jam, February 21, 2015.  So, what’s the PATH Data Jam? It’s a tech meet-up of sorts, that is designed to inspire residents everywhere to get actively involved in their community.  In this case, we’re talking about the community of PATH customers who commute to and from work, ride along from Newark to Jersey City for shopping or nightlife, or into NYC for….well, just about anything.

Specific questions that the PATH Data Jam will address include:

What is nightly ridership like? Who is it primarily serving? What are the possible economic impact of changes in schedule, length of cars, etc.? What is the impact of the weekend shutdown at Exchange Place? What communities rely most on PATH?

Issues like these may be taken for granted by riders, or simply expected to always work at the optimal standard.  But think tanks, dialogue, and exploration like the PATH Data Jam can have a big impact on the end user experience.

Isaiah Little, Brigade Captain of Code for Newark, told The Newark Times, “PATH Data Jam was originally organized to combat the proposed closure to the overnight PATH services.  Now it is in effort to organize residents and our civic tech groups around issues like this for the current and future efforts.  This PATH Data Jam is an example of how we can harness our resources, human capital, and institutions to address our problems collectively and creatively.”
