When asked of his goals for the next year, Jose Robles, owner of the comic book store Fortress of Solitude, mentioned paring down some of his storage: over a million comic books, graphic novels, actions figures, and other collectibles accumulated since the store’s existence in the 1980’s, some of the boxes being stored in the bathroom.
Fortress of Solitude was known as One Flight Up when it first opened on 587 Broad Street in 1981 (” we were on the second floor,” said Robles). It became Renaissance Books in 1997 before being bought by Robles in 2001 and, based on familiarity to comic fans, renamed after Superman’s hideout.
A collector himself, Robles’ massive collection stretches out to filling up his garage at home. Part of why Robles wants to shrink the number of items in the back is better answer the speculative market.
Fortress of Solitude sells many books and items from DC, Marvel, and independent publishers, some who are Newark natives. Due to the rising success of the superhero film, particularly with Marvel, some new fans transition into the comic realm look for old, no-longer-in print issues of the likes of Captain America, Thor, and others. With this spike in interest comes a higher price tag.
But according to Robles, it is the former hardcore readers, hit with revived nostalgia, who walk through the Fortress’ doors after seeing some of their favorite heroes come to life.
“Come on Wednesdays” he says, where many pick up their deliveries . More of the regulars tend to make appearances The store is also working on strengthening its social media channel, though their Facebook group’s numbers are a good indication of how strong their following is already. With this in mind, Robles and his team look to expand with more community outreach, in order to be more of a platform for local comic book and anime artists.
When asked what customers should get out of coming to the Fortress, it came down to one word: “Joy.”
The comic book community is a lively one, as seen by some of the employees getting lost in conversation with their boss over everything from the origin of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles to the debate on staying true to the comic in movie adaptations. This gives connotative definition to the store’s name: solitude, and safe space, for those whose mind thinks in comic panels and anime.
