Craig Drinkard, the Executive Officer of the Victoria Foundation, will be honored with an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree during Drew University’s 157th Commencement on Saturday, May 17, 2025. Drinkard, a long-time Newark resident and nonprofit leader, will also deliver the keynote address at the graduation ceremony, inspiring the Class of 2025 as they embark on their journeys to become the future leaders of tomorrow.

The prestigious honorary degree is awarded in recognition of Drinkard’s outstanding contributions to the community, particularly his transformative work with the Victoria Foundation, a philanthropic organization that has been instrumental in addressing generational poverty and providing resources for children and families in Newark since its founding in 1924.

“I am humbled and honored to receive this recognition from Drew University,” said Drinkard. “It is an incredible privilege to speak to the Class of 2025, the next generation of leaders who will make a lasting impact in their communities and beyond. I’m grateful to Drew University for this distinction, and I’m excited to share my journey and encourage these graduates to use their education to address the world’s pressing challenges.”

Drinkard has spent nearly two decades at the Victoria Foundation, working in various roles before becoming Executive Officer in 2022. Under his leadership, the foundation’s efforts have expanded, targeting systemic causes of poverty in Newark while focusing on strengthening community power, fostering economic justice, and promoting youth self-determination. His work has been instrumental in empowering underserved populations and strengthening Newark’s capacity to address complex social issues.

A Lifelong Connection to Newark

Born and raised in Newark, Drinkard’s commitment to his hometown is both personal and professional. He attended Newark Public Schools and benefited from the same programs funded by the Victoria Foundation that he now helps to support. His journey from a young person in an underserved neighborhood to a leader in the nonprofit sector is a testament to his dedication to his community and the importance of accessible educational and youth programs.

“As a youth, I took part in programs funded by the Victoria Foundation, such as the Boys and Girls Club and the New Community Corporation, which shaped who I am today,” Drinkard explained. “Now, I have the privilege of giving back to the same community that supported me. That’s what drives me: making a difference and creating opportunities for others to succeed.”

Empowering the Next Generation of Leaders

In addition to his role at the Victoria Foundation, Drinkard serves on the boards of several nonprofit and philanthropic organizations, participating in fellowships focused on racial and gender justice, and community power-building. His work extends far beyond Newark, as he strives to create a more just and equitable society by investing in underserved communities and fostering connections among leaders across the country.

Drinkard’s advice to the Class of 2025 emphasizes the power of responsibility and action. “When you find yourself in a position of leadership, it’s not just about what you’ve done. It’s about getting ready to do something even greater than before,” he said. “We live in unprecedented times, and it’s crucial to use the power and knowledge we’ve been given to tackle the big challenges ahead.”

Drew University’s Honorary Degree Tradition

Drinkard’s honorary doctorate adds to Drew University’s longstanding tradition of recognizing individuals who have made exceptional contributions to society. Drew University, located in Madison, New Jersey, is known for its commitment to academic excellence, community engagement, and fostering leadership.

The commencement ceremony, where Drinkard will address the graduates, will be a significant moment for Drew University as they celebrate the Class of 2025 and their achievements. The honorary doctorate, along with Drinkard’s keynote address, will undoubtedly inspire and encourage future leaders to make meaningful contributions to society, just as Drinkard has done throughout his remarkable career.
