Last Friday evening at The Coffee Cave (which has recently regained its position as the de facto spoken word poetry venue in the city) Newark poet, professor, and professional wrestling fanatic, Sean Battle, officially added “author” to his resume with the release of a collection of poems entitled, “The Forest of Bricks”.

Sean Battle moved to Newark in 2011 to pursue his Master’s degree in Poetry from Rutgers-Newark after having received a bachelor’s degree at the Rutgers-New Brunswick campus.  Immediately diving into the poetry communities on campus and off, he crafted a personal brand for himself anchored by his faith in God, love for the community, a passion for words and art, and a staunch refusal to be anything other than himself.

The book release at The Coffee Cave was a clear representation of that personal brand.  Co-hosts Mia X and The Beacon of Light brought the crowd to attention with their own poetry.  Featured performers included singers, poets, and musicians such as Ladii Jai, J-Read, Free Thought, Paper, True Zioness, Joseph “Assasin” Thomas, Fatima Zahara, Vincent Toro, and the Hip-Hop duo The Ubuntu Theory.  The line-up was capped by the man of the night, Sean Battle, who was introduced to the crowd with a  touching poem by his mother.

He performed work from the book including signature poems like “Black & Blue” and “Dah”.  Copies of “The Forest of Bricks” can be purchased by clicking HERE
