Gregory Porter’s deep, warm baritone and heartfelt songs have earned him a broad, devoted following and the distinction of being among the most respected singers on today’s jazz scene. Gregory Porter will be returning once again to perform live at NJPAC on Tuesday, February 18th.
In addition to his musicianship, Gregory Porter is also known for his philanthropic work in the community. In 2010 he founded The Gregory Porter Music Foundation which aims to encourage young people in Harlem through music education by providing them with instruments and lessons at no cost to those who qualify based on need or meritocracy.
Porter received his first Grammy award in 2014 for Best Jazz Vocal Album Liquid Spirit, then followed up with another win in 2016 for Best Jazz Vocal Album Take Me to the Alley.
Porter’s latest album Nat “King” Cole & Me, released in November 2017, is a tribute to one of his favorite singers. It debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Jazz Albums chart, #4 on Billboard’s Top Current Albums chart and #7 on the UK Official Charts for Pop Albums.
Porter says he always wanted to make an album that paid homage to Nat King Cole but never had the opportunity until now. “I was very aware that I didn’t want to just do it as a novelty,” he explains. “I wanted it to be something that felt authentic and heartfelt.”
