The City of Newark has declared a Code Red Heat Alert from 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 1, through 8 p.m. on Friday, August 2. Temperatures are expected to reach the 90s, with the heat index climbing as high as 99°F. This alert is issued to warn residents of extreme heat and humidity, which can lead to serious health issues and even death.
A Code Red Heat Alert signals dangerous weather conditions where the heat index is forecasted to exceed 100°F. During this period, it is crucial for residents, especially seniors and those with chronic health conditions, to take preventive measures against heat-related stress and exhaustion.
“The Health Department advises all Newark residents to be cautious during this heatwave,” said Director Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook. “We urge everyone to stay hydrated, avoid strenuous activities, and use air conditioning whenever possible.”
Residents are advised to:
- Use air conditioning or fans to stay cool.
- Drink water regularly, even if not thirsty.
- Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
- Avoid outdoor activities from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., when the sun is at its peak.
- Check in on neighbors who may be isolated.
In addition to the extreme heat, air quality will be unhealthy for sensitive groups. People with asthma, heart or lung disease, older adults, and children should limit outdoor exposure.
The Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services has activated shelters and extended their hours to assist those in need. Street outreach teams will operate from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily. If you encounter an unsheltered resident in need of help, text “Path Home” to 855-11 for assistance.
