Mayor Ras J. Baraka, Hotel Indigo Owner Samer Hanini, and Hotel Indigo General Manager Rany Baroudi will cut the ribbon to open the Indigo Hotel today, Thursday, March 26, at 3 p.m., at 810 Broad Street.
The 108-room boutique hotel is owned by the Hanini Group, operated by Crestline Hotels & Resorts, Inc., and franchised by an affiliate of InterContinental Hotels Group.
The hotel is a repurposing and renovation of the National State Bank Building, which was designed by the legendary early 20th-century architect Cass Gilbert. Gilbert’s greatest works include the U.S. Customs House on Manhattan’s Bowling Green, the Palace of Fine Arts in St. Louis, the United States Supreme Court in Washington, D.C., and the Woolworth Building in Manhattan, the world’s tallest when it was opened in 1913.
In keeping with the building’s construction, the hotel offers vintage-style furniture, and the bank vault has been configured as a pizza oven. In addition, the hotel sells locally-sourced food and drinks in its restaurant and bar and features a commissioned a mural by local artists from GlassRoots in honor of Thomas Alva Edison.
Edison perfected the stock ticker, one of his first major inventions, in a building on the block of Edison Place, where the hotel is located.
