Akintola Hanif and Steven Kern present HYCIDE at the Newark Museum – an evening of family fun, music, art, dance, photography, film and more, this Saturday, June 27th 4-9pm.
HYCIDE magazine hosted their last lauch party at the Newark Museum to an audience of 500+ attendees from the tri-state area. “Most of my friends don’t frequent the Newark Museum. I’m not talking about young people from the inner city when I say that, I’m talking about the community at large; the people outside of Newark’s art scene. For me this is about including my people & blending all ages, races and classes, in the same spirit that HYCIDE was created,” Hanif said. “I’ve been fortunate enough to be relatively welcomed by both sides of the coin – the community and the establishment – but my heart lies with the people. So I’m really just trying to bridge that gap, show people a good time, connect them with relatable art & culture and show the rest of the world how beautiful and diverse we are. This isn’t about me, it’s about my love for the people who are so often left out of this renaissance.”
Families are invited to come out and enjoy interactive and diverse art and entertainment, relax in the Alice Ransom Dreyfuss Memorial Garden, and be entertained by live performers. Newark-born poet, Blackberry Molassez will curate a spoken word cypher.
Guests will also have a chance to see two critically acclaimed independent short films, Exit Road by Yuri Alves and NO BONI by Dubois Ashong along with the museum’s internationally recognized exhibitions. Moroccan photographer and videographer Hassan Hajjaj exhibits My Rockstars. George Osodi’s monumental photographs Royals & Regalia: Inside the Palaces of Nigeria’s Monarchs will also be on display.
This event is free and open to the public.
