When local standard time is about to reach 2:00:00 am on Sunday, March 8, 2020, clocks are turned forward 1 hour to 3:00:00 am Sunday, March 8, 2020, local daylight time instead. This is what we know as Daylight Savings.
That means sunrise and sunset will be about 1 hour later on Mar 8, 2020 than the day before. We’ll lose an hour of sleep, but there will be more light in the evening. That also means to be very mindful of your Sunday plans. Showing up an hour late to just about anything isn’t good form.
Daylight Savings was originally proposed by New Zealand scientist George Vernon Hudson with a 2-hour shift forward in October and a 2-hour shift back in March. Can you imagine?? American statesman Benjamin Franklin has also been credited with the original idea, but that credit has been met with a significant measure of uncertainty and doubt. On July 1, 1908, the residents of Port Arthur, Ontario, today’s Thunder Bay, turned their clocks forward by one hour to start the world’s first DST period.
Benefits attributed to Daylight Savings include lower crime rates, less traffic accidents, and minimized use (and cost) of energy). But as far as this weekend goes, be prepared. Whether your plans include laundry, Sunday worship, brunch, or just sleeping in, don’t just trust that your phone and your cable box update automatically. Also make sure your oven and microwave are set ahead Saturday night. It only takes one glance at the microwave to check the time to throw your day off.
