Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Health and Community Wellness Director Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook have activated a “Code Blue” Cold Weather Health Warning for the city of Newark. The alert is effective from 8 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, December 24, until 9 a.m. Tuesday, December 30.
During this period, overnight temperatures in the Greater Newark region are expected to drop to a low of 22°F. A “Code Blue” is typically triggered when temperatures fall below 32°F or when the wind chill factor reaches 0°F.
The Health Department urges residents to take precautions against serious illnesses caused by extreme cold, focusing on vulnerable populations such as seniors and those with chronic health issues. Citizens are encouraged to check on neighbors who may be isolated.
