Mayor Ras J. Baraka, alongside key city officials, cut the ribbon today on Phase C of Newark Riverfront Park, also known as “The Notch.” The ceremony took place at the Passaic River’s edge, marking a significant milestone in Newark’s ongoing waterfront transformation. Phase C is the result of $14 million in investment across nine city lots and a tremendous amount of collaborative effort, including two construction companies, a design team, as well as the NJ Dept of Environmental Protection.
“Riverfront Park represents the best of community collaboration,” Mayor Baraka said. “Residents envisioned this space, and today, through partnerships with NJDEP, Essex County, and more, we’re making it a reality. This park enhances the quality of life for Newarkers and visitors alike.” The newly opened section, which extends from the Dock Railroad Bridge to NJPAC, includes a riverfront walkway, an amphitheater, an art wall, and food kiosks.
The Newark City Parks Foundation, now in charge of maintaining the park and providing programs, will continue to ensure the park remains a vibrant community hub. “The dream of a Newark riverfront park has turned into reality,” said Marcy S. DePina, Executive Director of the Foundation. “We’re excited to offer high-quality, free programs in this beautiful green space.”
NJDEP Commissioner Shawn M. LaTourette praised the project’s progress. “The opening of ‘The Notch’ marks a transformative moment. It connects Newark to the Passaic River, creating a healthy, green space for families and nature lovers.”
Newark Riverfront Park, first opened in 2013, has become a popular destination for both locals and visitors. With activities like festivals, art shows, fitness classes, and boat tours, the park continues to grow as a space for recreation and community engagement. Today’s opening adds to that vision, with plans to further extend the park from the Ironbound to the North Ward.
