Mayor Baraka has declared a State of Emergency for the City of Newark effective immediately and lasting throughout the weekend. All cars, except emergency vehicles are required to stay off City streets until 6 a.m., Sunday, January 24, 2016. Nonessential persons are also required to stay off the streets. The emergency declaration may be extended depending on conditions.
“We are cautioning Newarkers to stay off the roads so that our emergency personnel and vehicles can get to urgent calls,” said Mayor Baraka. “We anticipate that the freezing temperatures and icy conditions will make travel more dangerous throughout the day. Please stay indoors today and stay tuned to news channels and the City of Newark website for additional information.”
“Cars are blocking plows from doing their jobs, and are endangering the lives of our first responders,” added Director of Public Safety Anthony Ambrose. “Get your car off the road, don’t drive, and look in on a disabled or elderly neighbor to see if they need help.”
