As of 5pm today, Mayor Baraka has issued a travel ban for the City of Newark restricting travel in all cases except emergencies. The Department of Public Safety and the Department of Neighborhood Services have reported that the overwhelming number of private vehicles that are stuck in the snow throughout the City are causing a hazard.
Any private vehicles that are found blocking streets and causing a hazard will be relocated by City contracted towing services and ticketed, if necessary. This operation began at 6 pm. Police will begin to alert residents via a public address system at 7 pm that parked vehicles on certain primary streets must be removed.
“We have been offering warnings to citizens since yesterday about these conditions. This is not the time to be on Newark streets with nonessential vehicles,” said Mayor Baraka. “Already, we have seen fire, police and emergency vehicles affected while carrying out their duties because of irresponsible drivers. Residents must obey this travel ban immediately.”
The travel ban will be in effect until further notice.
