Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director of the Department of Health and Community Wellness, Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook, have extended the “Code Blue” alert in Newark from 8 p.m. on Monday, January 6, to 9 a.m. on Monday, January 13. The cold weather warning comes as temperatures are expected to drop to as low as 21°F during the week.

A “Code Blue” is issued when temperatures reach 32°F or when wind chill factors drop to 0°. The City of Newark is urging residents to take extra precautions to prevent cold-related illnesses, particularly for vulnerable populations such as the elderly and individuals with chronic or mental health conditions. The Health Department also encourages residents to check on their neighbors, especially those who may be isolated or without access to necessary services.

During a Code Blue, the City of Newark enforces the Housing Code, which mandates that all property owners provide adequate heat. Between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m., the minimum indoor temperature must be 68°F, and between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m., it must be at least 65°F. Newark residents who experience heat or hot water issues in their homes are urged to contact the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.

The Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services is also extending its support to the homeless during this cold spell. Shelters will increase their capacity, and street outreach teams are available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily to offer assistance to those without shelter. If you encounter someone in need of non-emergency services, text “Path Home” to 855-11, and outreach teams will respond. For more sheltering information, residents can contact the Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481.
