Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Director of the Department of Health and Community Wellness Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook have activated a “Code Blue” cold weather health warning in Newark from 8 p.m. last night until 9 a.m. on Tuesday, December 24. With temperatures expected to drop to a low of 19°F, residents are urged to take immediate precautions to protect themselves from the serious risks associated with extreme cold weather.

“Code Blue” is issued when temperatures fall to 32°F or lower, or when wind chill factors reach 0°F. The City of Newark continues to encourage residents, particularly seniors and those with chronic health conditions, to be extra cautious during these extreme weather conditions. The Health Department also reminds residents to check on their neighbors, especially those who may be isolated from family and friends during these cold periods.

Under the Newark Housing Code, property owners are required to maintain a minimum indoor temperature of 68°F between 6 a.m. and 11 p.m. and 65°F during the nighttime hours of 11 p.m. to 6 a.m. Any reports of insufficient heat or hot water should be immediately reported to the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.

In response to the “Code Blue”, the Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services has extended the hours and increased bed capacity at local shelters. Street outreach teams, available from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. daily, are actively reaching out to unsheltered individuals to encourage them to seek shelter. If you encounter someone in need of non-emergency assistance, you are encouraged to text “Path Home” to 855-11, and outreach teams will assist.
