Newark’s public safety ecosystem is poised for a new chapter with the appointment of Emanuel Miranda as the Director of Public Safety, Sharonda Morris as the new Police Chief, and Leonardo Carrillo as the Deputy Director of Police Operations. These changes are a direct response to the city’s commitment to enhancing law enforcement and ensuring the safety of its residents.
Mayor Ras J. Baraka announced the appointments, recognizing the vast experience and expertise these leaders bring to their respective roles. “Director Miranda’s 23 years of service to our city, his deep knowledge of public safety, and his leadership as Newark’s former Chief of Police make him an ideal candidate to guide the Department of Public Safety,” said Mayor Baraka. “Police Chief Sharonda Morris, with her impressive background in police operations and administration, is the right person to lead our police force. Deputy Director Carrillo’s experience, especially with the Consent Decree Unit, will further strengthen our policing efforts.”
Director Miranda, a lifelong Newark resident, began his career as a patrolman and steadily rose through the ranks, ultimately serving as Chief of Police. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity, “I am infinitely humbled to accept the appointment of Newark Public Safety Director. Serving this city with integrity and respect for every resident is my top priority.” Police Chief Morris, a Newark native and a 26-year veteran of the Newark Police Division, echoed similar sentiments, stating, “Becoming Newark’s Police Chief is the realization of a long-held goal. I’m excited to work with our dedicated officers to continue reducing crime and fostering strong community relations.”
