The city was well-represented this weekend at the 5th Annual Walk to the Water and River Day, the yearly citizen’s parade from City Hall to Riverfront Park celebrating the founding of the city and diversity of its residents.  As people gathered on the City Hall steps, the excitement began to build among the paraders, and curiosity built among walkers-by.  Program Director, Marcy DePina galvanized the crowd and distributed t-shirts and signs to keep everyone unified.  Riverfront Revival, the non-profit that manages Riverfront Park, has adopted the slogan “The River Belongs to the People”.

At noon, the Malcolm X Shabazz High School marching band led the parade down Broad Street to Market to cheers from onlookers, then down Market, passing the Paramount marquee, Newark Penn Station, down Ferry Street, and arriving at Riverfront Park to kick off River Day at 1pm.  Once at the park, crowds gathered throughout the afternoon and enjoyed performances spanning spoken word poetry and song by Kween Moore and Shadeed Madyun, the New Ark stage play produced by Yendor Productions, a tap dance performance by Maurice Chestnut, a performance and open class by Capoeira Mucurumim, a yoga class by Fayemi Shakur, and more.
