Great Oaks Legacy Charter School (GOLCS) – a Newark-based six-campus public charter school that educates 1,800 students in grades PK4-12 – will host a Vaccination Day for its school community. Despite the obstacles created by the pandemic, GOLCS has continued to support its students, staff, and Newark residents.

The GOLCS Vaccination Day will be held on Tuesday, May 4th from 3:15 to 7:15pm at the GOLCS Legacy campus (823 South 16th Street). Newark residents that are 18 years or older and interested in receiving the first dose of the Moderna vaccine will be able to do so at this socially distanced event. GOLCS will then hold a second event 28 days later so those individuals can receive their second dose. Vaccinations are being distributed on an appointment-basis.

“At Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey we are committed to protecting our employees, patients and community members from this deadly virus. We have already vaccinated more than ten thousand employees  and community members and we are proud to work with Great Oaks Legacy Charter School and other community partners to create additional access to this much needed vaccine,” said Darrell K. Terry, Sr., President and Chief Executive Officer, Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of New Jersey.

According to CDC data, only about 22% of people 18 and older in Essex County have been fully vaccinated as of April 8th. This event will build on GOLCS’s commitment to serving the Newark community by helping increase access to the COVID-19 vaccine and help the Newark community recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We decided to do this for our school because we recognize how important a strong community is. With such a challenging time that all educational institutions have faced in the last year, it has caused many educators to find alternate ways to support our students and families,” said Lamar WashingtonSchool Based Organizer Great Oaks Legacy Charter School. “We believe in our families and recognize that there are moments when schools have to go above the status quo to ensure that our family, school and community receive the resources that they need.”
