Mayor Ras J. Baraka and Department of Health and Community Wellness Director Ketlen Baptiste Alsbrook have officially extended the city’s Code Blue advisory. The warning is now in effect from 8:00 PM on Tuesday, February 24, until 9:00 AM on Saturday, February 28, as overnight temperatures are forecast to plunge to a low of 24°F.

A Code Blue is a critical health warning triggered when temperatures fall to 32°F or the wind chill reaches 0°F. The extension ensures that emergency measures remain active following the historic blizzard that recently blanketed the city.

Heating Rights and Housing Code

During this extreme cold, the City of Newark reminds property owners of their legal obligations under the Housing Code. From October 1 through May 1, owners must provide:

• 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM: Minimum indoor temperature of 68°F.

• 11:00 PM – 6:00 AM: Minimum indoor temperature of 65°F.

Residents without heat or hot water should report violations immediately to the Division of Code Enforcement at (973) 733-6471.

Sheltering and Homeless Outreach

The Mayor’s Office of Homeless Services is working with city partners to increase bed capacity and extend shelter hours. Street outreach teams are patrolling 24/7 to assist the unsheltered.

If you see someone in need of non-emergency services:

• Text: “Path Home” to 855-11

• Call: Office of Homeless Services at (973) 877-9481 (Mon-Fri, 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM)
