In anticipation of the National College Basketball Playoffs at Prudential Center from March 27-29, 2025, Newark Alliance, Invest Newark, and the City of Newark’s Arts and Education District have launched “Newark Fan Fest.” This mobile passport is designed to engage the estimated 19,000 visitors arriving in Downtown Newark for March Madness while encouraging both residents and visitors to explore the city’s thriving small businesses, cultural institutions, and vibrant arts scene.
“We’re proud to showcase our vibrant downtown with its tourism and destination ecosystem to all who travel here for the courtside thrill of March Madness,” said Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “This is an exciting opportunity to activate the vibrancy of our city, spotlight the diversity of our retail and entertainment businesses, and create connections and new memories with visitors and residents alike.”
The “Newark Fan Fest” mobile pass offers visitors exclusive access to local businesses, special events, and promotions across the Arts and Education District. Available through a QR code and interactive map at hotels, businesses, and online, the pass invites participants to explore more than 25 local establishments, including popular venues like Bunkr., Tinjune Sports Lounge, Just Fish Bar & Grill, and Bar Vanquish.
Ashley Mays, Chief Real Estate and Marketing Officer of Newark Alliance, shared, “We launched Newark Fan Fest to welcome fans in our local businesses and cultural venues during the tournament, but the effort also strengthens Newark’s reputation as a go-to destination for entertainment and nightlife, supporting Newark’s long-term growth.”
Visitors can access the mobile pass on the Newark Arts & Education District website, which features details about local watch parties, events, and businesses. Additionally, pass holders can participate in a “punch card” game to win prizes for attending events and shopping at participating businesses.
The city’s arts community will also play a prominent role during Newark Fan Fest. Newark Grounds, a walkable cultural corridor, will showcase over 75 public art installations, giving visitors a unique opportunity to explore the city’s artistic flair. The interactive map of Newark Grounds can be accessed through the Project for Empty Space website.
The Home Court Marketplace, produced by the Newark City Parks Foundation at Mulberry Commons, will add to the festival’s offerings, featuring local vendors, food trucks, and Newark-themed merchandise. Local tourism ambassadors will also be on hand, guiding visitors through the Arts and Education District, offering walking tours, and sharing recommendations for what to see and do.
Marcus Randolph, CEO of Invest Newark, emphasized the community’s involvement, saying, “This initiative is about creating meaningful connections between visitors and the Newark community. We are excited for visitors to experience our local retail, restaurants, and culture during this major event.”
The launch of “Newark Fan Fest” is poised to not only enhance the March Madness experience for visitors but also to highlight Newark’s unique cultural and business offerings, ensuring that the city continues to grow as a top-tier destination for both tourism and local engagement.
