Mayor Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, Fire Director James W. Stewart, and Fire Chief John G. Centanni swore the 41 recruits of the Newark Fire Department’s 44th Recruit Class into their duties as Newark Firefighters yesterday.
The new Firefighters include a married couple, Cesar and Veronica Gray, and a second female, Aida L. Villalongo. Battalion Chief Raul Malave served as Master of Ceremonies. U.S. Representative Donald M. Payne, Jr., a former Newark Municipal Council President, was among the dignitaries in attendance.
“Just a few months ago, we welcomed you into the Academy. The minute you stepped into that Academy, you became a member of the Newark family. This is an honor; being part of an elite group of Newark Firefighters. As you help, as you fight, remember we love you. Whenever you get down, whenever you go into those dark places, remember to take God with you. You are a soldier. Not just for Newark, you are a soldier for God,” said Mayor Baraka.
The last Newark Fire Department Recruit Class to join the Department was the 43rd Class, which graduated on February 21, 2014. It consisted of 26 members.
“You have now entered one of the most rewarding and challenging professions in the City, nation, and world. Fire service is not a career, it’s a calling,” said Director Stewart. “You have answered that call, and you will become warriors, leaders, and heroes in our own communities, in front of your family, friends, and neighbors. Your work will save lives and property, and inspire a City with your honor, commitment, and courage. I am proud to welcome you to our brotherhood and sisterhood of Firefighters.
“Graduating from the Newark Fire Academy is both an ending and a beginning,” said Chief Centanni. “You have completed your formal training, from the greatest instructors in the nation, in the finest academy in the nation. But you are now beginning your active service. You will report to your first company, join your colleagues, and face your first real fires. The lives of our residents and your brothers and sisters will be on the line when you answer calls. Every situation will be new and different. Listen to your brothers and sisters on the job. Learn from them. What they teach you may help you save your life and that of others. As you gain experience, you will become the leaders and mentors for generations of firefighters to come, and I look forward to when you achieve higher ranks and responsibilities in the greatest Fire Department in America.”
