The Newark History Society’s next program, “The Essex County Park System: A Solution to Newark’s Struggle for Parkland,” will take place on Monday, September 16 at 6:00pm in NJPAC’s Chase Room.
Kathy Kauhl, archivist for the Essex County Parks Department, will mark the Park System’s 125th anniversary by discussing early efforts to establish parks, with a focus on Weequahic and Independence parks. Two defining features of the Park System were that it was county-wide, allowing parks to cut across municipal lines, and it encouraged commitment and advocacy from the local residents. Newark was a prime beneficiary of the new approach to establishing parks.
This program is free and open to the public, but NJPAC requests a list of RSVPs. Please RSVP by September 12 by sending an email to: NewarkHistorySoc@gmail.com.
