Mayor Ras J. Baraka and members of the City of Newark Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning Concerns Commission unveiled the Newark LGBTQ Friendly Business Decals today, at Vonda’s Kitchen, at 183 West Kinney Street.
The decals, which depict the rainbow-striped LGBTQ Pride flag, will be displayed by businesses throughout Newark to show their support of the LGBTQ community and welcome to LGBTQ visitors and patrons. The initiative to create and display the decal was spearheaded by the Newark LGBTQ Concern Commission, and is supported by the Newark Downtown District and Newark Community Economic Development Corporation.
“Today is a historic day for LGBTQ rights and pride in the City of Newark and across the entire nation,” Mayor Baraka said. “This morning the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriages are legal throughout the entire nation, opening doors for couples across the land. Here in Newark, we are showing our support of the LGBTQ community by them with open arms in our businesses and attractions, as residents and neighbors, and part of our greater community. In Newark, we are committed to inclusiveness and diversity. We are committed to equality and justice. Most of all, we are committed to transforming Newark and America into a City and nation we can all believe in.”
