Mayor Ras J. Baraka and the Newark Parking Authority announced that the City will offer two hour free parking at all parking meters and pay stations in Newark starting Monday, December 21, and continuing through Monday, December 28. The city will resume collecting from meters and pay stations on Tuesday, December 29.
The city has parking meters in all five wards, but most are in the central business district.
“We are doing this to encourage people to come to and stay in Newark to do their holiday shopping,” Mayor Baraka said. “We have outstanding stores, like the Whole Foods Market in our downtown and the ShopRite in our Central Ward, which can make planning and preparing holiday meals more convenient. Our specialty shops can provide residents and visitors alike with unique gifts and support holiday traditions new and old. I welcome shoppers to our city, hope they enjoy their shopping, and urge them to practice social distancing during this COVID-19 pandemic.”
While charges for parking meters are being waived, fines for double-parking, parking in prohibited zones, or on street-cleaning days, remain in effect, and will be enforced. Municipal ordinances banning parking at bus stops or at fire hydrants also remain in full force.
The program of waiving parking charges is a regular event, and is run by the municipal Department of Finance and the Parking Authority.
