The Newark School of the Arts (NSA), a pillar of arts education for more than five decades, has announced a temporary pause in programs and operations, effective immediately. This short-term measure is intended to allow the organization to thoroughly evaluate its programs, financial structure, and long-term sustainability. The goal is to ensure that NSA remains a vibrant, community-driven institution for generations to come.
“This decision was made with deep care and reflection,” said Lori Scott-Pickens, Board President. “We recognize the challenges this pause presents to our students, families, and faculty. However, it is a necessary step toward preserving the mission and legacy of the Newark School of the Arts and ensuring it continues to serve Newark for another fifty years.”
The organization concluded that a brief pause would provide the necessary space to restructure responsibly, reinforce its foundation, and emerge stronger. The pause is not a closure, but a period of strategic reorganization and renewal.
A Commitment to Students and Families
Throughout this transition, the Newark School of the Arts remains committed to supporting its families and ensuring transparency. The school is working to:
- Protect tuition investments and process refund requests for prepaid tuition on a prorated basis.
- Provide direct communication with families through in-person meetings and one-on-one support.
Assist with student records, transcripts, and recommendations for alternative programs during the pause.

Honoring a Half-Century of Impact
Since its founding in 1968, the Newark School of the Arts has served over 50,000 individuals. It nurtures creativity, discipline, and confidence through instruction in music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Currently, NSA serves over 750 students weekly across 30 disciplines. The school has been recognized as a “Major Presenting and Service Organization” by the New Jersey State Council on the Arts.
