Continuing its annual tradition, Newark Trust for Education is seeking public high school students throughout the District to help moderate the organization’s 2020 Newark Board of Education Candidates Forum, taking place on April 2, 2020. Deadline for student moderator applications is February 21, 2020. The School Board Election, on April 7, will be the first time since the state takeover in 1995 that the District will be entirely out from under state control.

“We talk a lot about the importance of listening to students and engaging them in civic discourse, which is vital to meeting their needs and achieving student success,” said Ronald Chaluisán Batlle, Executive Director, Newark Trust for Education. “There’s no better opportunity for students to learn about the School Board Election, develop questions they – and the students they represent – want to ask, and present those questions to the candidates, than at our Forum.” In recent years, student moderators’ questions covered such topics as accountability, equity, student wellness and mental health support, and budget and finance topics.

To be eligible, the student must attend a district high school in Newark and be available to participate in four in-depth training sessions, led by Mr. Chaluisán. The mandatory training schedule is:

·         Thursday, March 5, 2020 – 4:30-6:30PM
