Mayor Ras J. Baraka, the Newark Municipal Council, and Deputy Mayor for Community Engagement Jacqueline Quiles will host Mayor Ras J. Baraka’s 4th Annual Latin Festival on Sunday, August 5, from Noon to 9 p.m., on Bloomfield Avenue between Lake Street and Clifton Avenue, in Newark’s North Ward.
Andy Montanez, known as “El Godfather de la Salsa” and “El Nino de Trastalleres,” who gained international fame as a member of El Gran Combo with songs like “Un Verano en N.Y.” and other hits, will serve as the festival’s headline entertainer. He remained with the salsa orchestra for 15 years, later joining Dimension Latina. After a couple of years with the group, he left to pursue a successful solo career.
The festival will celebrate Latino arts and culture with a wide array of family-oriented activities, including live music and entertainment, arts and crafts, and other programs for children of all ages. In addition, free health screenings will be offered to attendees. City of Newark will provide information on job and career training opportunities, municipal ID cards, and other programs.
Leading television stations Univision New York 41 and UniMás 68, will take part in the Latin Festival. Popular DJs from Univision’s La X 96.3 FM, including DJ C-LO, DJ Pereira, and DJ Anthony Rey will bring its audience only the best music to have the crowd on its feet.
