Every Wednesday evening in downtown Newark, the historic Hahne & Co. building transforms. Inside CoolVines Newark at 625 Broad Street, a quiet hallway fills with residents toggling between DJ channels on wireless headphones and sipping local cider.
This is Members Only Happy Hour, a weekly staple created by Isaiah “Zay” Little, founder of Gallery Retail. For nearly four years, this event has blended music, community-supported agriculture (of the cultural variety), and social experimentation to create what Little calls “Newark’s Cheers.”
A Community-Supported Model for Culture
Despite the name, “Members Only” isn’t about exclusion—it’s about investment. Operating on a “Netflix for local arts” model, the program is funded through Gallery Retail’s Patreon.
“If we have 500 people giving $25 a month, they become our bosses,” Little explained. “Our accountability becomes people subscribing or unsubscribing.”

This subscription model allows the event to remain consistent, providing a reliable “third space” for artists, nonprofit leaders, and corporate professionals to network without the barriers of traditional nightlife.
The Silent Headphone Experience
The event’s signature is its silent DJ format. Guests wear wireless headphones, allowing multiple DJs to spin simultaneously.
• The Party Mode: Put the headphones on to immerse yourself in the set.
• The Networking Mode: Take them off to enjoy a drink and a clear conversation without shouting over speakers.

A Launchpad for Emerging Talent
Members Only has become a vital platform for the region’s music scene. The lineup often features DJs traveling from Miami, Texas, and Philadelphia. Twice a month, the event hosts Open Decks sessions, allowing rising Newark talent to perform for a live, supportive audience.
Partnership That Works
The success of the night hinges on the collaboration with local businesses like CoolVines Newark. By providing the venue and beverage service, the business benefits from hyper-local marketing, while Gallery Retail gains a high-quality home for its weekly rhythm.
This Week’s Event
This week’s Members Only Happy Hour will feature an Open Decks session, giving new DJs the opportunity to perform for the crowd.
The event begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday at CoolVines Newark, 625 Broad Street, and runs until approximately 8:45 p.m.
For those curious about attending for the first time, Little describes the experience as an invitation to possibility and a bridge to a larger goal: building more mid-sized creative venues in Newark that sit between “the barbershop stage and the Prudential Center.”
