The New Jersey Department of Transportation announced that it will close the ramps linking I-280 with Route 21 (McCarter Highway), starting Friday, January 8, 2016, at 11 p.m., and continuing until 6 a.m., on Saturday, January 9.

The work is being done to accommodate bridge deck replacement on I-280 and to enhance efficiency at the interchange.

“The state Department of Transportation is moving to expeditiously repair the I-280 bridge and improve traffic flow at the interchange with Route 21, which is one of the most important ones in Newark,” Mayor Baraka said. “I urge motorists using this intersection to allow additional travel time during this work.

This project involves closures of several existing ramps both long term and some permanently as well as the opening of new temporary ramps to maintain access between I-280 and Route 21.  The ramp from I-280 westbound to State Street will be permanently closed in the near future. NJDOT will provide information before the closure takes place.
