Summer may be coming to a close, but the fun isn’t over yet – neither is the mission. For Precious Litlle Ladies the mission is year-round, and there’s still time for some fun in the sun. On Saturday September 21st fun and games will be paired with unity and community as they raise awareness – literally and figurative – at the Precious Little Ladies Awareness Rising Kite Flight at Elmwood Park in East Orange. East Orange City Council members, business owners and community leaders will come together with families from all over the tri-state to join the mission.
The goal is to raise awareness for the prevention of child molestation, domestic violence, incestuous abuse and sexual assault, by bringing these issues to the forefront and addressing them in an environment where children, parents, men, women, survivors and advocates feel empowered to seek help, ask questions and share their stories – all while having fun.
The idea came to mind for Founder and President, Aziza Kibibi, as she reflected on her childhood memories with her late brother, as the two of them learned to fly their first kite at Eastside Park in Paterson NJ. The kite gave her a sense of liberation and, for her, represents breaking free of the sexual abuse by her father, that plagued her childhood.
“The kite for me was always a reminder that better days were ahead” says Kibibi. “I remember my little brother and I looking up at our red kite in the sky, and saying to each other ‘Hey, that’ll be us someday’. The kite is a symbol of hope that whatever your situation – however bad it may seem or be, whatever trauma you’ve experienced – you can fly, you can break free, you will. And we support you”.
Kibibi’s childhood experience, which was recently reenacted on Investigation Discovery’s “Evil Lives Here”, is the foundaLon of why she created Precious Little Ladies, and the fuel that drives its mission forward. Kibibi knows that while her story is tragic, it’s far too common.
The event will begin at 10am with registration. Welcome and introduction will take place immediately after, followed by the first kite flight. After which, attendees will join in with kites of their own, or complimentary kites which will be distributed at the registration.
The Precious Little Ladies Awareness Raising Kite Flight is free to the public. Xhale Radio of East Orange, NJ is among the various event donors and sponsors. The New Jersey Trafficking Task Force and Victim of Crime Compensation Office will be providing resources and information to attendees. This event is hosted in partnership with Mayor Ted Green, 3rd and 4th Ward City Council, the Department of Recreation and Cultural Affairs and the Department of Health and Human Services.
Precious Little Ladies invites you all to enjoy good music, good food, and an all-around good time for a good cause.
