Chinonso Anyanwu, a fourth-year student at Rutgers-Newark and a double major in Finance and Economics, is one step closer to achieving his goal of bridging the gap between finance and social entrepreneurship. He was recently awarded the prestigious Schwarzman Scholarship to study at Tsinghua University in Beijing, China. This scholarship will allow him to further his mission of blending the worlds of finance and social good.

Anyanwu’s commitment to integrating finance with social entrepreneurship is evident in his efforts to build a startup that uses AI to help young people from diverse backgrounds gain financial literacy and job skills. “It’s been transformative seeing finance from a lens that focuses on how it can have a more collective, shared value,” says Anyanwu. Growing up in Bloomfield, NJ, Anyanwu always understood the importance of economic inclusion and is eager to explore the global relationship between the U.S. and China, especially with China’s rising influence on the world economy.

Selected from nearly 5,000 applicants worldwide, Anyanwu’s Schwarzman Scholarship will provide him the opportunity to meet global leaders in politics, business, and philanthropy. His startup, Synergy, began at Rutgers-Newark and aims to address the disconnect between youth development and mental health, areas he identified through research. His fellowship with The Resolution Project further exemplifies his dedication to improving communities globally. During his studies in China, Anyanwu plans to examine China’s rapid economic growth and how it may offer lessons to improve wealth distribution and opportunity in America.
