Saint Michael’s has recently been recognized by two independent national organizations for excellence in healthcare.
For the third time in a row, Saint Michael’s was awarded an ‘A’ in fall 2019 Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade, a national distinction recognizing the hospital’s achievements protecting patients from harm and providing safer health care.
Earlier, Healthgrades recognized Saint Michael’s with America’s 100 Best Hospitals in three specialties: cardiac care, gastrointestinal care and general surgery. Healthgrades also recognized Saint Michael’s as a Five-Star Recipient in numerous specialty areas. (Click here to see all our recent awards.)
Both Healthgrades and Leapfrog are independent national organizations that rate hospitals across the country on a variety of publicly available data.
Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group, said hospitals that earn an A show their leadership in protecting patients from preventable medical harm and error.
“It takes genuine commitment at every level – from clinicians to administrators to the board of directors – and we congratulate the teams who have worked so hard to earn this A,” Binder said.
Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for 32 of the most common inpatient procedures and conditions using Medicare data, and outcomes in appendectomy and bariatric surgery using all-payer data provided by 15 states.
Saint Michael’s is the only hospital in Newark to receive an America’s 100 Best Hospitals designation and the only hospital in Essex County to be designated America’s 100 Best Hospitals in general surgery and gastrointestinal care. Saint Michael’s also received more America’s 100 Best Hospitals designations than any other hospital in Essex and Hudson counties.
