On Monday, May 18th The Citizens Campaign celebrated the success and new innovation of their Civic Trustees in Somerset, NJ. They recognized the new work of dedicated individuals in Trenton and Perth Amboy to create a more engaged and socially conscious populous and introduced a new set of trustees that will be working out of Newark, NJ.

In case you’re unfamiliar, this description from their website does pretty well in summing up with Civic Trusts strive to do:

Civic Trustees are a new force for strengthening our cities’ ability to tackle tough issues.  They are committed to identifying evidence-based solutions to their city’s problems, and working together to implement them with a “no-blame” approach. They make a pledge to serve their city, with their fellow Trustees, by working together to make their city stronger than it is today.

Trustees in Trenton and Perth Amboy have already spent significant time investing in green infrastructure, bolstering civic engagement in local high schools and creating a citizen police force. Via monthly meetings, community stake holders are able to pool resources and arrange social capital to come up with unique, viable, and implementable solutions to community problems.

The hope is that the inaugural group of Newark trustees will be able to bring similar success to this community.

“There civic trustees are at the front lines of saving our democracy.” Chair Harry Pozycki said, “They are serving as powerful examples of people who are driven by service wanting to better their city.” And as a trustee, I hope that I may be a part of that positive change!
