The Newark Museum of Art will be hosting a series of virtual programs to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, an annual observation of the histories, cultures, and contributions of American citizens whose ancestors came from Spain, Portugal, Mexico, the Caribbean and Central and South America, held September 15 through October 15.

This year’s celebration aims to spark engaging conversation around the new Latinx terminology, spotlight artistic treasures of Puerto Rico with a virtual Museum Crawl, and invite guests to a grand celebration for the Day of the Dead to honor culture and the memory of loved ones. A number of Latinx artists from the Museum’s collection will also be featured across its social media platforms throughout the month.

Beginning on Saturday, September 26, the Museum is holding its fourth virtual roundtable discussion with a group of esteemed panelists to explore and share perspectives on the new Latinx term, what it means, and why in recent years the alternative to the pan-ethnic Latinos/Latina term has emerged.

“As a cultural institution located in the center of Newark, a city with one of the largest Hispanic populations in the state, we are proud to honor Latinx culture year round through our programming, exhibitions and revered collections. We welcome guests to join us in honoring the tremendous contributions of the Latinx community this month and beyond,” said Silvia Filippini-Fantoni, Deputy Director of Learning and Engagement at the Newark Museum of Art.
