The New Jersey Devils have officially strengthened their hockey operations department, announcing that Braden Birch has joined the organization as Assistant General Manager. The appointment, made by General Manager Sunny Mehta, brings a championship pedigree to the Brick City as the Devils look to return to the pinnacle of the NHL.

In his multi-faceted role, Birch will serve as the General Manager of the Utica Comets (AHL), the Devils’ primary affiliate. Beyond overseeing the development pipeline in Utica, he will be a key advisor to Mehta on pro scouting, contract negotiations, and long-term salary cap strategy.

A Proven Winner from the Sunshine State

Birch arrives in New Jersey after a highly successful 12-year tenure with the Florida Panthers, where he worked closely with Mehta to build a roster that secured back-to-back Stanley Cup Championships in 2024 and 2025. For the past five years, he served as Florida’s Director of Hockey Operations and Salary Cap Management, mastering the financial complexities of modern roster construction.

“Braden will be an extremely valuable addition to our senior hockey operations group,” said Mehta. “His blend of on-ice experience, management background, and intellect will serve him well in his new role.”

From the Blue Line to the Front Office

Birch’s deep understanding of the game is rooted in his experience as a player. A 2008 draft pick of the Chicago Blackhawks, the Hamilton, Ontario native played four seasons at Cornell University, where he served as a tri-captain. His professional playing career spanned the ECHL and Finland’s Liiga before he transitioned into management as an intern with the Panthers.

“I am really excited to take this next step in my professional career,” Birch stated. “I look forward to working with Sunny and his group on returning the Devils to the levels of success that we believe they can achieve.”

With a Master’s degree in Sports Management and a track record of building champions, Birch’s arrival marks a significant investment in the Devils’ front-office intellect and work ethic.
