Newark residents and history enthusiasts are invited to experience a Newark “first” this autumn: a free, guided trolley bus tour through the tree-lined streets and historic architecture of the North Ward’s Forest Hill Historic District.
Organized by Explore Newark Tours, these two-hour guided excursions will showcase the neighborhood’s remarkable homes, rich heritage, and colorful historical personalities. The district, which is listed on both the National and New Jersey Registers of Historic Places, features more than 100 architecturally significant “key” homes spanning its 57-block footprint.
Bordered by the Olmsted-designed Branch Brook Park and anchored near the monumental Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart, Forest Hill stands as one of the state’s most architecturally preserved residential neighborhoods.
Guided by Local Expertise
The tours will be led by neighborhood resident and Explore Newark Tours founder Tim Hoey. His narrative combines architectural details with engaging “behind-the-walls” anecdotes that bring the district’s history to life.
Explore Newark Tours has received the support of The Prudential Foundation through its Community Grants Program, in partnership with the Community Foundation of New Jersey, alon with the Forest Hill Community Association and Essex County Parks.

The free trolley tours will take place on two Saturdays this October, with both morning and afternoon options available:
- Saturday, October 3, 2026: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM OR 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
- Saturday, October 24, 2026: 10:00 AM – 12:00 PM OR 1:00 PM – 3:00 PM
