Newark has hit a new milestone in sustainable living with J&L Companies’ latest development, Fifty-Five Union, becoming the first residential building in the city to earn a Fitwel® certification. This landmark achievement underlines the developer’s dedication to promoting the well-being of its residents.

Fifty-Five Union, situated in the historic Ironbound district, has been recognized by the Center for Active Design (CfAD) for meeting stringent standards that support physical, mental, and social health. The building shines with features that nurture wellness, including ample natural light, over 20,000 square feet of outdoor space, and top-tier fitness amenities.

The certification acknowledges the property’s innovative approach to design and operation. It encompasses eco-friendly elements, such as a living green wall and a sustainable roof, alongside enhanced air quality controls and energy-efficient appliances.

“Newark’s commitment to health and sustainability is evident in our urban development strategies,” said Mayor Ras J. Baraka. “Fifty-Five Union exemplifies this ethos, meeting our environmental goals and more. Congratulations to J&L on this well-earned recognition.”

Deputy Mayor and Director of Economic and Housing Development Allison Ladd praised the building’s foresight in design, “Fifty-Five Union is not just a building; it’s a Fitwel-Certification Masterpiece, reflecting our city’s vision for a healthier, greener future.”

The development, a product of collaboration among top industry professionals, ensures residents’ health remains the focal point. Notable contributors to the project include MEP Engineer VanPraet/Weisgerber Turnkey Engineering, Minno & Wasko Architects and Planners, and several others who played a critical role in the building’s success.

Gabriel Lopez, Vice President of J&L Companies, shared his pride in the certification, “We’re setting a new standard in Newark, providing a green, healthy living space that’s a first for the city. Fifty-Five Union is where sustainability meets luxury.”

Brenda Sanchez, Director of Operations at J&L Companies, who led the certification effort, expressed her satisfaction, “Our hard work in prioritizing environmental and wellness best practices has paid off. We’re thrilled to have Fifty-Five Union recognized for its positive impact on our community.”

Located at 55 Union Street, the building offers a range of modern studio, one-, and two-bedroom apartments, now available for leasing. With proximity to Newark Penn Station, downtown entertainment, and the Ironbound’s vibrant Ferry Street, residents enjoy a connected lifestyle.

The residences boast chef-inspired kitchens, solar shades, and access to high-speed internet via Newark Fiber. Residents also have access to a rooftop garden, a fitness center, and various indoor amenities, ensuring a comfortable and connected living experience in the heart of Newark.
