Last week, the Newark Regional Business Partnership hosted a talk on the current state of healthcare, particularly as it relates to the Newark community, sponsored by Barnabas Health, Gibbons P.C., and STV Incorporated.  As mentioned on the organization’s website, the healthcare paradigm in America is changing, and hospitals and health care systems across the nation are in the midst of a rapidly evolving landscape. Healthcare services are moving from inpatient to outpatient settings and providers are taking responsibility for the health of large populations, with the goal of keeping people well.

Newark is leading New Jersey’s transformation and is one of the national leaders on creating a new “Culture of Health.” The new model moves from disease prevention to a wellness model focused on the highest quality of care with the latest in technology. Barry H. Ostrowsky, President and Chief Executive Officer of Barnabas Health, discussed the role of strategic partnerships and business opportunities, ways that the new model of healthcare will change the institutions and services, and why Newark is poised to emerge as a national model.

He candidly spoke on the fact that there are health issues that many of us may be taking for granted that are disproportionately raging among residents Newark. This is particularly troubling in a city that is experiencing such an upswing in commerce.

He also mentioned that the mayor had been hosting open forums in each ward of the city and asking residents to come forward and speak on the healthcare they want to have, and the information gained in the process has truly been eye-opening.
