The search for the next legendary voice has officially begun. The New Jersey Performing Arts Center (NJPAC) today announced that registration is open for the 15th annual Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Known affectionately as The SASSY Awards, this premier event has become a global springboard for emerging vocalists looking to make their mark on the music industry.
Solo vocalists from across the globe have until September 8, 2026, to submit their entries. The competition is open to independent singers over the age of 18 who are ready to showcase their vocal quality, musicality, and ability to swing on one of the most iconic stages in the country.
A Legacy Born in Newark
The competition honors the incredible legacy of Newark’s own Sarah Vaughan. In 1942, Vaughan was just a local teenager when she won an amateur contest at the Apollo Theater, sparking a career that would change American music forever. Today, The SASSY Awards continue that tradition of discovery. Past winners include stars like Samara Joy, the 2023 Grammy Award winner for Best New Artist, proving that the NJPAC stage is where tomorrow’s legends are born.
The Final Showdown at NJPAC
In the fall, five finalists will be selected to travel to Newark for the final performance on November 22, 2026. They will compete before a live audience and a distinguished panel of judges, including:
• Jose James, a leading vocalist for the hip hop generation.
• Gretchen Parlato, three time Grammy nominee.
• Jason Olaine, Vice President of Programming at Jazz at Lincoln Center.
• Lillias White, award winning singer and actress.
• T.S. Monk, acclaimed percussionist and son of Thelonious Monk.
The first prize winner will receive a $5,000 cash award and the invaluable platform that comes with being a SASSY Award recipient.
