Few cities on earth carry a deeper, more soulful connection to the evolution of house music than the Brick City. This September, that rich cultural legacy takes center stage in downtown Newark through an inspiring new weekly cinematic gathering.

IN THE WAKE TV, in partnership with Newark Culture Club, has announced the launch of “Black House Black Joy NJ,” an exclusive film screening series taking place every Saturday evening throughout September. The series will officially debut on Saturday, September 5, 2026, at 5:00 p.m.

Hosted at Newark Culture Club (located at 563 Broad Street), the series is dedicated to honoring and uplifting the deeply rooted history of Black and LGBTQ+ contributions to house music. Each Saturday, attendees will experience films, visual projects, and documentaries that illuminate the transformative, unifying power of the movement.

Centering Our Cultural History

For project producer Antoinette Montague, the screening series represents a vital effort to document, preserve, and celebrate a home-grown cultural movement that helped shape global dance music.

“Newark has a profound connection to house music, and this film series is a love letter to the community that built it,” said Montague. “Through ‘Black House Black Joy,’ we aim to center our cultural history, celebrate our resilience, and create a joyous space for connection, reflection, and community building.”

The weekly screenings offer more than just cinema—they create an intentional gathering space where residents, music lovers, and cultural stewards can connect.

A Premier Downtown Venue

The choice of venue further reinforces the event’s commitment to supporting local culture. Newark Culture Club has quickly established itself as a standout craft cocktail bar and live entertainment hub along the Broad Street commercial corridor, proudly featuring a curated selection of local and Black-owned spirits, beers, and wines.

Attendees can enjoy thought-provoking films in an intimate, welcoming setting that celebrates Newark’s past, present, and creative future.
