Long before world-renowned bass Kevin Maynor commanded stages at the Metropolitan Opera, Carnegie Hall, and the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, his musical journey began with a simple third-grade instrument: the Tonette. That early spark led him to the trombone, but it was a chance encounter in his school hallway—where a teacher heard his rich vocal resonance while singing casually with friends—that redirected his instrument from brass to the human voice.
That discovery catapulted him into formal classical training at the Manhattan School of Music at age 16, laying the foundation for an international operatic career. This Friday, September 4, 2026, Maynor brings that lifetime of vocal mastery back home for an intimate performance at the Newark Community School of the Arts (NCSA) at 89 Lincoln Park. Accompanied by pianist Eric Olsen, “An Evening with Kevin Maynor: A Night of Inspiration, Artistry & Impact” kicks off at 7:00 PM.
The recital promises an expansive vocal journey traversing Italian, German, standard English, and regional dialects, alongside classic African American spirituals.
“They represent what I believe everybody should be exposed to,” Maynor shared in a recent conversation. “A little bit of everything… what I think is part of the American landscape, the complete exposure.”
From Moncalm to the Bolshoi
Though Maynor’s formal vocal training began in New York, it was during an international choir competition in Moncalm, France, at age 21 that he fully realized the power of his gift.
Representing his university chorale on a European tour, Maynor took the stage for his featured competitive solo, delivering a powerful performance of “Daniel, Daniel, Servant of the Lord.” Thinking his job for the day was finished, he headed back to the dressing room, changed out of his concert attire into jeans and a t-shirt, and returned to the auditorium simply to watch the remaining choirs perform and await the judges’ final scores.
Instead, as he walked back into the ornate theater, the audience recognized the young soloist and erupted into synchronized applause—a European tradition honoring exceptional performance. Prompted by an usher to sing an unexpected encore, Maynor stepped back on stage in his casual clothes and delivered a stirring rendition of “Were You There?,” followed by “Deep River.” The audience was so moved they gave him a standing ovation, leading to an impromptu television interview with the local mayor.
“Amiens, Limoges, Chartres, Paris—everywhere I went, the response was the same,” Maynor recalled. “I came back to the States and figured I must have something important and significant.”
That epiphany propelled him to study at Northwestern University, land a contract with the Santa Fe Opera, and ultimately earn a Fulbright Award to study as an apprentice artist at the Bolshoi Opera in Moscow—making him one of the first Western artists to train at the prestigious Russian institution. Maynor went on to sing over 70 operatic roles in five languages with major global institutions, including the Lyric Opera of Chicago, New York City Opera, and the Scottish Opera. He also founded Trilogy: An Opera Company in Newark to elevate works by Black composers and showcase stories of the African Diaspora.
A Legacy Rooted in Newark
Maynor’s connection to the Newark Community School of the Arts dates back to around 1993, when board members recruited him following an informal tennis match over at Society Hill. Seeing an opportunity to champion local artistic sophistication, he joined the board of directors and has remained an anchor for the organization ever since.
For Maynor, exposure to high-level art isn’t just about vocal technique—it is a holistic philosophy that reshapes how individuals engage with the world.
“High-level art affects everything you do,” Maynor emphasized. “It teaches you how to coordinate the clothing in your closet, how to decorate your home, the significance of paint and one color against another… It makes people whole and complete. It will make you more loving. It will make you more kind.”
