A new era of healthcare accessibility has arrived in the heart of the Brick City. In a move designed to bridge the gap between world-class technology and community needs, WNBA legend Sheryl Swoopes and Mayor Ras J. Baraka officially inaugurated the New Jersey Imaging Network’s (NJIN) state-of-the-art facility inside the iconic Hahne’s Building.

Located at 609 Broad Street, this ribbon-cutting marks a targeted strike against healthcare disparities in Essex County, where cancer remains a top-three health concern. By anchoring this facility in a historic community hub, NJIN is eliminating the travel barriers that once forced residents to leave the city for high-end diagnostics.

Precision and Proximity: The NJIN Mission

Newark’s healthcare landscape faces unique challenges, including a poverty rate nearly three times the national average. Access to precision tools is no longer a luxury; it is a necessity.

“Access to high-quality diagnostic imaging has historically been out of reach for this community, but this center changes that,” NJIN leadership noted. The facility is strategically placed on the Broad Street corridor, making it easily accessible via major NJ TRANSIT hubs.

Sheryl Swoopes: Advocacy Rooted in Experience

Three-time WNBA champion and Olympic Gold Medalist Sheryl Swoopes has emerged as a powerhouse advocate for women’s health. Her involvement is deeply personal, driven by the toll cancer has taken on her own family. Swoopes emphasized that the Hahne’s facility is a tool for empowerment, ensuring Newark’s Black and Brown communities have access to the same diagnostic standards found in the nation’s wealthiest zip codes.

Legislative Momentum for Breast Health

The opening coincides with a major legislative push. NJIN, RadNet, and Swoopes are currently backing New Jersey bills A3128 and S1244, which aim to eliminate out-of-pocket costs for diagnostic and supplemental breast imaging. The Newark center serves as a “boots-on-the-ground” example of why financial accessibility must pair with state-of-the-art technology.

Inside the State-of-the-Art Facility

The new NJIN center brings a suite of advanced medical services to downtown Newark:

• 3T Wide-Bore MRI: High-resolution imaging designed for maximum patient comfort and shorter scan times.

• 3D Mammography: The gold standard for early breast cancer detection, offering superior clarity over traditional scans.

• DEXA & Ultrasound: Vital tools for bone density and comprehensive internal health screenings.

Mayor Ras J. Baraka highlighted the facility as a key component of a revitalized Newark that prioritizes wellness. As the Hahne’s Building evolves, the addition of NJIN ensures the “New Newark” is as healthy as it is vibrant.
