The NJ Devils have announced another collaboration with community partners to celebrate Black history month on Tuesday, February 11, when the New Jersey Devils take on the Florida Panthers.

The history of black players in North American ice hockey has roots dating back to the late 19th century. The first black ice hockey star was Herb Carnegie during the Great Depression. Willie O’Ree broke the NHL’s black color barrier with the Boston Bruins.

Last year, the Devils honored Black History with the NHL’s mobile museum dedicated to contributions of black hockey players in the league, as well as a live performance by Wyclef Jean.

This year, the Black History Celebration will include:

Game start: 7:00PM

Location: Prudential Center in Newark, NJ

The night will feature

• A pre-game documentary screening of Willie O’Ree, the first Black hockey player in the NHL.

• In-game and concourse activations.

• Access to the American Legacy Black Hockey Mobile Museum (1:00PM – 8:00PM on game day).

• New Jersey Devils branded Black History Month t-shirt.

• Group post-game photo on the Devils’ main ice, with the opportunity to meet PK Subban and Wayne Simmons.

This is a night for us to come together, support our community, and to be part of a special night that is centered around us.
