University Hospital, New Jersey’s only public academic medical center and Northern NJ’s sole Level I Trauma Center, announced that the State Senate has confirmed five new members to its Board of Directors. The appointments come at a pivotal moment as the hospital undergoes a massive campus redevelopment and modernization initiative.

Governor Mikie Sherrill has designated Sarah Adelman, the former Commissioner of the New Jersey Department of Human Services, as the incoming Board Chair. Adelman’s background in overseeing Medicaid and behavioral health programs is expected to provide critical stability as safety-net providers face nationwide funding challenges.

“University Hospital is more than just a hospital; it is a vital anchor for the health of our entire state,” said Governor Sherrill. “I am proud to appoint Sarah Adelman to guide this group of distinguished leaders.”

A Diverse Coalition of Newark Leaders

The new directors represent a cross-section of public service, law enforcement, and community advocacy:

  • First Lady Linda Baraka: A tireless advocate for Newark-based equity in health and education.
  • Sheriff Amir D. Jones: Current Essex County Sheriff with deep roots in regional public safety.
  • Rev. Dr. David Jefferson, Sr., Esq.: Lead Clergy for Choose Healthy Life and pastor of Metropolitan Baptist Church.
  • Tracie DeSarno: A veteran of intergovernmental affairs and policy governance.
  • Dr. Amy P. Murtha: Joining as the designee for the Dean of NJMS, bringing maternal-fetal medicine expertise.

Driving the “Modernization Era”

President and CEO Carole Johnson emphasized that these leaders arrive as the hospital breaks ground on a multi-building clinical and academic complex in partnership with Rutgers Health.

Current Modernization Milestones include:

  • Emergency Department Expansion: Redesigned to support over 100,000 annual visits.
  • Liver Transplant Excellence: Expansion of the nationally-ranked Center for Advanced Liver Diseases.
  • Next-Gen EMS: Deployment of state-of-the-art ambulances recognized as top-tier in New Jersey.
  • Surgical Suites: Modernized operating rooms to enhance same-day procedure access.

Strengthening the Safety Net

The transition in governance arrives amid concerns over Medicaid cuts. Senate Majority Leader Teresa Ruiz noted that the new board’s experience is essential to navigating a landscape where “vital healthcare programs are placing families at greater risk.” Chair Sarah Adelman echoed this, stating her commitment to ensuring the hospital’s “financial and operational stability” during its most ambitious growth phase in decades.
